Day Outing at the “Cottage”

Hi friends! I’m posting a picture of my favorite independent Scrapbook & Card brick & mortar store, Checkered Cottage. Looks like I’m squinting but it really was not sunny- just cold.

This store is in downtown Kirkwood, MO a block north of the train station. It’s about 15 miles from my home, so typically I go about 1-2 times every month when I am running other errands. Kirkwood’s downtown is a fun outing- lots of local shops with unique items AND great restaurants. During the holidays, Kirkwood & the Checkered Cottage are all decked out. The owner has a real talent for decorating & ‘on trend’ home decor. She’s often seen re-arranging so if you missed something you’ll be sure to see it the next time. Shipments of product arrive regularly from the top makers. It’s packed with product but it never feels crowded or overwhelming- Just beautifully decorated.

Like many of you, I’m a Stampin’ Up person, so I don’t buy much of anything except SU! brand. SU! quality lasts even if the product is 10 years old as long as it was well cared for. See Real Red corduroy buttons below.

Sometimes I get a little non- SU! paper or ribbon but mostly I buy retired SU! items. YES- you read that right! In the back of the store is a section called “Recreate” & this is where used items are sold. All brands but I look for SU! Anything that has been on the “floor” for a month goes to 1/2 price. I wait for that unless I really want something specific & it’s there.

Today I took two medium sized shipping boxes filled with retired stamps. I love the idea that someone will find that stamp set that they missed before it retired & create with it. I do save some of my favorite sets but since I almost exclusively use current product, I don’t hold onto much except Christmas and masculine.

The above is what I got for paper crafting.

  • Inventory:
  • A sheet of 12 x 12 for pocket scrapbooking or cards- Photoplay ($1.25); Not re-Create; new item
  • Un-opened package of 1 round sponge for $0.50,
  • A 2005 3 x 4 Penny Black Scene stamp #3231K; Snowy Park $3; I’ll probably make a bunch of sympathy cards & then take it back for re-sale. That’s what fun about the Re-create section; you can get something new to you & play & then re-sell it.
  • AND MY FAV- SCORES from SU!-
    • Real Red Corduroy brads $1.50. I’ll use these on some Christmas cards using retired plaids- a folksy kind of card. I’ll remove the metal brad prongs & adhere with strong adhesive.
    • A SU! Background stamp called Hardwood; $5.00. I make a lot of guy cards & it will be good for wreaths too.
    • All this for less than $15

And Here’s the Good News for my pocketbook- I picked up $17 in commissions from my retired re-create stamps that sold. {I know you’re green with envy.} Anyway, I came out $2 ahead & so it seemed logical that I should splurge- just a little bit. So I picked up this little bird for $9.(see pictures below)

We have downsized our Holiday decor but I like to get a little something new. And I like to support my favorite local businesses. C’mon on- isn’t he adorable?!! I have a larger brown bird in a red plaid & a wall hanging with red/black lumberjack ribbon. This lil’ guy is going to fit right in. I haven’t gotten into the gnome trend- it’s cute but just not me & My Mr. So I’ll stick with the winter flannel theme.

Cute, trendy chick in b/w lumberjack & pine petals. Not gnomes 🙂
Back side & tail.

That said, I hope to make some gnome cards with that fun DSP from the July- December mini catalog. But please that’s not a promise. Right now it is just a dream as there’s not action plan…I’ve got to finish a few projects before I jump to that.

Last month I got a high quality fall candle that lasted for at least 4 weeks! That’s a win-win- support local business & consumable product that we loved!

Anyway, I have convinced you to visit St. Louis? Or at least if you’re from Missouri & coming to the Lou anyway, to stop over at Checkered Cottage inn Kirkwood. You might even find one of my retired stamp sets.

I have a post for tomorrow, but since I’m posting so late today, I’ll post tomorrow’s a little later too.

Have a great Friday! Marilyn (aka MJ)
