Adorable Owls- version 3- Artistically Avid

Hello again, friends! Thanks for indulging me yesterday with the exciting news from Stampin’ Up. And thanks for returning today for the third & last day in my Adorable Owls series. For the past two days, I’ve shared two different cards- a simple or Casual card & a stepped up version or Avid card. Today’s card is an Artistically Avid card… lots of design elements, layers & embellishments.

The sketch of the card is the same as the last two days which was intentional so I could show how easy it is to take your casual card & step it up. I often start with a Casual card & then make it my own with “twists”.

My card base & DSP layer are the same as the casual card.

How to make this card:

Chose three pieces of coordinating double sided Designer Series Paper (DSP). Cut to 3.75 x 4.5″. TIP: If you use 12 x 12 paper you can get 6 sets. Then cut the 4.5″ side at 1.5″ and 3″. Now there are 3 pieces that are 1.5″ by 3.75.

Pick a coordinating color of cardstock & cut a 4″ X 4.75″ piece to serve as a mat. Mine is Mango Melody. Mount the three 1.5″ x 4″ DSP pieces equal distance on the cardstock. Set aside. TIP: Align the two outer pieces approximately the same distance from the edges & then center the middle piece between the two outer pieces.

Wrap Fresh Freesia Open Weave ribbon across the middle of the Calypso Coral & DSP panel & secured ribbon to the back.

The birthday owl was stamped with Momento Tuxedo Black ink on Basic White cardstock & cut with a Layering circle die. The owl was colored with Gray Granite & Crumb Cake; Calypso Coral & Fresh Freesia were the accent colors. The owl was mounted on a Fresh Freesia scalloped circle. Then a Fresh Freesia Open Weave ribbon bow was tied & mounted using glue dots to the left of the owl panel.

The sentiments were stamped in Momento Tuxedo Black onto scraps of Mango Melody cardstock. They were cut a little wonky & added at angles to boost the fun of this adorable card. Last Fresh Freesia Opaque Adhesive-backed gems were added.

  • Supplies: from Annual Catalog unless otherwise stated
  • Stamps: Adorable Owl #160269 (Sale-a-bration ’23) ; Sentiment on inside- Something Fancy #160416 (Jan-April ’23 Mini Catalog)
  • Cardstock: Fresh Freesia #155613, Calypso Coral #122925; Mango Melody #146989
  • Designer Series Paper (DSP): Dandy Designs #160836 (Sale-a-bration ’23)
  • Ink: Momento Tuxedo Black #132708; for coloring: Fresh Freesia #155611, Calypso Coral #147101, Balmy Blue (eyes) #147105; Gray Granite #147118; Crumb Cake #147116
  • Tools: Layering Circle Dies #155170; Blender pen #102845

Adorable Owls- version 2

Hi friends! Yesterday, I shared with you a Casual card using the Adorable Owls Sale-a-bration stamp set & my Sketch #2. plus the wonderful Sale-a-bration DSP called Dandy Designs, a 48 sheet pack.

Today, I’m going to take it up a notch & share an Avid card.

As you can see, I flipped the sketch from horizontal to vertical & centered the circle. To make the original casual card a little more interesting, I cut the 1.5” x 4” rectangles on the diagonal, giving me 6 triangles.

A Mango Melody 4” x 5.25” piece serves as a mat for the triangles. TIP: mount a triangle at the top & the bottom then piece together an alternative DSP design to comple the top & bottom rectangles.

I spaced the middle triangles equal distance from the top & bottom rectangles & added a thin strip (approximately 1/4”) of Fresh Freesia.

The birthday owl was stamped with Tuxedo Black ink on Basic White cardstock & cut with a Layering circle die. A bit of color was added using Calypso Coral & Fresh Freesia.

Three strips of cardstock in different lengths, widths & colors (Fresh Freesia, Mango Melody & Calypso) were added to the back of the diecut owl. That entire piece of cardstock strips & the owl were popped up with dimensionals & mounted to the center of the card panel.

The card panel was then mounted to a card base of Fresh Freesia. Last a bow of Fresh Freesia Open Weave ribbon was added.

So there you have it- an Avid Version of yesterday’s Casual card. Let me know what you think. Happy Stamping, Marilyn (aka MJ)

Adorable Owls

Have you seen the Adorable Owls Sale-a-Bration stamp set? There are so much creativity with this set. I think because it is truly adorable. For my next three posts I will be sharing cards made with this set & the same sketch- my Sketch 2.

There’s a casual card (today) an avid card & an artfully avid card. Basically it’s a simple card that’s stepped up some in version 2 & stepped up even more in the third version. Nice to have options. Here’s the casual card.

Marilyn Jones Sketch 2

Chose three pieces of coordinating double sided Designer Series Paper (DSP). Cut to 3.75 x 4.5″. TIP: If you use 12 x 12 paper you can get 6 sets. Then cut the 4.5″ side at 1.5″ and 3″. Now there are 3 pieces that are 1.5″ by 3.75.

Pick a coordinating color of cardstock & cut a 4″ X 4.75″ piece to serve as a mat. Mine is Calypso Coral. Mount the three 1.5″ x 4″ DSP pieces equal distance on the cardstock. Set aside. TIP: Align the two outer pieces approximately the same distance from the edges & then center the middle piece between the two outer pieces.

Using a scrap piece of coordinating cardstock, stamp the owl in Basic Black. Stamp your sentiment using the same color of cardstock. Also cut a 1/2″ X 4″ piece of the same color of cardstock & add dimensionals to the back. Tie a piece of ribbon in a coordinating color around the cardstock strip.

Punch out the stamped owl using the Decorative Circle punch. Color the owl according to your taste. Since this is a casual card, I didn’t color much & this is also why I used a light colored cardstock in Fresh Freesia. The non-white background gives the image some fun without adding a lot of time for coloring.

The last steps are building your card. Adhere your DSP-cardstock panel to the card base. Adhere the ribbon-cardstock strip across the center of the DSP panel. Adhere the Owl and the sentiment to the outside. Add a sentiment to the inside.

It’s a very basic card that’s easy to mass produce. I always like the clean & simple designs for a swap group that I belong to. But these stampers are so experienced that I don’t want it to be boring. In my next post, I’ll show how to take it up a notch.

Come back soon for the second card- the Avid version. Thanks for stopping today. Happy Stamping, Marilyn (aka MJ)

Sending Support

Hi friends! Today’s card was made to showcase more of Stampin’ Up’s new products. There are so many great products in the new Mini Catalog (January-April ’23). I wanted to share something other that the favorite Petal Park & Regency Park which I’ve used on previous days. Another day I will get going on Valentine cards but in the meantime I made this card.

I used for the Color Throwdown Challenge of Gray, Navy and White.

I also chose a sketch from this week’s Sketch Challenge at Splitcoaststampers but I flipped the sketch so I could show you these fabulous dies called “Around the Bend” in the new Mini Catalog. .

The papers are really the star here…the silver is from “Like an Animal” DSP & the Night of Navy is from “By the Bay”. Both DSPs have such a nice shine & the design is similar with the scale or shell design. Gotta’ love how SU! products coordinate even between product bundles!

The sentiment if from ” Sending Support” a Sale-a -bration stamp set. Such nice sentiments in this one set. The one on the front of the card pairs with the inside sentiment. Front: There are so many ways you might feel right now… Inside: Alone isn’t one of them. The sentiment was cut with the Tailored Tag dies from the Annual Catalog.

Gray twine left over from the December Paper Pumpkin was wrapped around the tag. And silver pearls from the Red & Green adhesive backed Pearl pack which carried over from the holiday Mini Catalog.

On the inside, I used the cut off piece from the front’s Around the Bend dies & a little strip of By the Bay Night of Navy DSP.

Here are two pictures of some of the new products.

Fitting Florets DSP & FMS#566

I know I’ve written before about this stunning DSP called Fitting Florets. But I just love it! And it was already out on my workspace so I made another card & made it for the Freshly Made Sketch Challenge #566. It’s one of my favorite challenges.

The Balmy Blue & White ribbon match perfectly with the Fitting Florets DSP. The ribbon is still available & is a carryover (not retiring).

I enjoy making all kinds of cards but I really enjoy using DSP, ribbon & embellishments. So most of my cards have lots of goodies! Stampin’ Up makes it easy with their color coordination. The ribbon was showcased with the Storybook Gnomes but the Balmy Blue &

BALMY BLUE & WHITE 3/8″ (1 CM) DOUBLE-STITCHED RIBBON • 159629 | $7.00
J-D ‘22 P. 43

The blue gems are so pretty in person but the card picture just doesn’t do it justice. Stampin’ Up color coordinates between catalogs too- these gems are in the new January-April catalog & are also Balmy Blue, along with Calypso Coral & Gold.

This January, I’m focusing on Thank You cards, Sympathy cards & Birthday cards so stay tuned for more ideas. Later in January, I’ll work on Valentine cards. Anyway for this card, my sentiment comes from a set in the Annual Catalog called Artistically Inked. I love the big script font!

Here’s another close-up & pictures of other products not pictured above.

Have a great day! Marilyn (aka MJ)

Sketch & Step-back Saturday

Hi friends! Happy Saturday! And happy long weekend!

Today I am sharing the sketch that I used yesterday. I’ll be sharing some of my favorite sketches from time to time. The new sketches will always be on a Saturday, but not every Saturday.

I usually don’t share a card that doesn’t have current product but I wanted to show you how you can take a card & make a similar one with whatever you have on hand. But you won’t be able to buy all the supplies for this one.

My card uses a 14 year old stamp and the rubber is in great shape and it stamps incredibly well. Gotta’ love how our SU! products hold up over time. The stamp is from a set called Thanksgiving Blessing. I think the image is ageless. The other stamps in the set are too, but the font is a bit old-school. Anyway, this stamp is 3.25 X 3′ even a larger size works such as 3.5 x 4 inches. I stamped it in Blackberry Bliss on Very Vanilla with lots of “white space” & it’s mounted on slightly larger piece of Blackberry Bliss. I set it aside so as to prepare the rest of the card.

My card base is also Blackberry Bliss. I embossed a 4 x 5.25 piece of Mango Melody with the Stripes & Splatter embossing folders (#157180-Currently available). Then I added a 1.5 x 5.25 piece of DSP. This is retired “Plaid Tidings” from 2020. I added my main panel using dimensionals.

Around at the top, I wrapped & made a bow in the retired Blackberry Bliss Striped Ribbon from 2021. Three orange/yellow Holiday Rhinestones from last year were added in the corner.

This sketch is so versatile, the image, the base and the side panel can all be size adjusted. I change up the papers & embellishments & sometimes it seems like you have a totally different card even though you are using the same sketch. Bounce back to yesterday to see the same sketch in action.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this Sketch & Step-back Saturday. Card.

Happy Weekend & Happy Stamping! Marilyn (aka MJ)

Santa Express Card Pack Card

Hi Friends & Happy Friday! Happy LONG weekend!

My card today is another #simplestamping card. Have you ever ordered the Memories & More Card Packs? I love them for pocket scrapbooking & Simple Stamping cards.

One side of the cards often have space for journaling & the other is artwork. The kits have lots more things; this one has designed acetate, wooden words & shapes & stickers.

SU offers card packs that work perfectly with the Cards. SPOILER ALERT: my friend Sally Nusbaum at The Gathering Place and I are designing a class for you using both the cards & envelopes and the card pack so you’ll have lots of holiday cards in no time. Stay tuned for more details.

My card & a few of the card pack contents

The center of the card “Joy, Peace & Love” is one of the cards; I cut 1/8” off all four side & then mounted it on a piece of Mint Macaron. The white layer is actually our White Velvet paper; it’s scrumptious! It has a little sparkle- very subtle & it feels so nice. A super close up below shows the detail (I hope).

I embossed the White velvet with the Wintery 3D folder & mounted it on my Mint Macaron card base. Then I cut a 1.5” x 5.25” piece of the Celebrate Everything DSP & mounted it on my white Velvet & added my main panel.

Super Simple right? Have a great weekend & holiday. Marilyn (aka MJ)
